I've done some testing and exploring now.
And if you @ somebody in a DM, they get added to the conversation from that message onwards. Which I think is useful to understand.

@karin @whitep4nth3r ohhhh!

Initiating a DM is still not a confident thing for me. I can't create a new DM via the DM tab... seems that's just starting a message with and @.
Is that that you did, @karin ?

@ask Thanks!
I've learned that by mentioning somebody with @, you'll add them to the DM thread from that point on. Which is an important detail to know, I think.

@karin @whitep4nth3r Ah. Yes. You do indeed.
Some hints are there, but this does need a little more awareness in order to not make a public gaff IMO.
Knowing that @-ing someone adds them to the thread is an important detail.

@ppk I'm doing that right now. :)
And the fact you don't know about it is another good validation.
(Other guinea pigs were used in the conducting of this DM test.)

@karin Seems like that remains the case until we @ her in the conversation. At which point the person gets to see. I gather.

@ppk Ooh this is VERY valuable information.
Not to self: Lucky I didn't use @ in all those DMs whispering about PPK behind his back.

@karin I appreciate it though. Pssst... whispering about Salma

Asking due to some uncertainty I'm feeling from the UI

@Elliotclyde Hmmm, nor me on my mobile app now you mention it. On the web I see it.

@robhawkes Good to know.
Mostly I just want to be able to message someone here occasionally without shouting to the world.

@sturobson Yeah, that's what given me pause before sending my first DM. Some messages I thought were just replies to me appear in my DMs as I visit there for the first time.

Are Direct Messages in #Mastodon actually private messages or just replies?

@jaffathecake Somehow that half face crop always seemed current and accurate. Which is a miracle in itself. Iām mostly just jealous of that fact. I welcome and enjoy the latest JakeFace.
